During World War II, German troops invaded the Netherlands. The Diary of Anne Frank, written by a Jewish girl living in the Netherlands, recounts episodes of the suffering of Jews living in countries occupied by the Nazis. Anne Frank was taken to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died. British troops liberated this camp exactly five years after Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands.

Nazi troops and their sympathizers gather in Berlin's central square and burn books by Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Bertolt Brecht, Albert Einstein, and other authors condemned by the Nazi regime as decadent or "anti-German."
