Mount Sinai Hospital, the first Jewish hospital in the United States, is founded in New York. The founders of the hospital were, for the most part, Jews who immigrated from Germany. One of them, Samson Simson, was one of New York's first Jewish lawyers.

After completing the construction of their synagogue, the 400 Jews of Verona, Italy, move to the Jewish ghetto. This date was considered a “Purim” for them, as they believed they would live safely inside the ghetto.
