25 years have passed since the first meeting at the former headquarters of the Congregation Beit Yaacov, when it was decided to create a new Jewish magazine, with the name “Morashá”. Since its creation, in 1993, until this 100th edition, Morashá has grown, expanding its reach and projects, and has become Instituto Morashá de Cultura. voluntary quarterly magazine, with just 35 pages and sent to 5 thousand homes, became a professional publication, with 88 pages, with a distribution of 30 thousand copies in Brazil and around the world.
Its copies have been included in libraries and used as a research source. The inserts included in the Magazine, with step-by-step instructions for preparing for the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Pesach, have served thousands of Jews. However, in these 25 years our objective has remained: to spread Judaism in all its aspects: religious, historical and cultural. Appropriating the words of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, showing with each edition the “greatness of being Jewish”.
The Morashá Institute expanded its activities beyond publishing the Magazine. Two books were published – the Haggadah and Roots of a Journey. He brought renowned speakers to Brazil. A digital file was created containing images of Eastern and Sephardic Jews in their countries of origin. The images were displayed in a grand exhibition. This digital collection will soon have easier access. Migration to a new internet platform is underway, which will allow remote consultation of all content, in high resolution.
Our community, Congregation Beit Yaacov, has also grown in these 25 years. A new Synagogue was built, on Rua Veiga Filho, with an imposing structure. A first bilingual Jewish school was founded, the renowned Beit Yaacov School.
And Brazil? And Israel? It's the world? Over these decades, they have also undergone important changes. Here in Brazil, a new currency was launched, the Real; hyperinflation has been overcome. Israel has developed and grown in all aspects, despite difficulties and repeated bloody terrorist attacks. The United States has been victimized by terror attacks. Abroad, the European Union was created, uniting peoples, cultures and currencies; but neither was it safe from repeated terrorist attacks. Technological innovations have changed our existence, new discoveries in the field of medicine, increasingly faster processors; The internet allows us to access an ever-increasing amount of information.
Morashá has been following technological advances. A website, which attracts a large number of visits, has allowed magazines to be read online since 2000. Since 2014, the site has had new tools available to our users, the number of which has been growing exponentially.
The timeline we created below includes important moments in the evolution of Morashá, and we chose some important events in Brazil, Israel and the world, to better place our victorious climb in time.
